Like a White-winged Dove

In Spring of 2011 we were lucky enough to see a White-winged Dove. We didn't have to go far, in fact, we didn't even have to leave the house. We woke up one morning after a wind storm to find this beautiful specimen sitting in a tree in our front yard.

We snapped off a few quick shots before it flew off. That same day, I submitted an article to The Corner Brooker about what we saw.

Listed as a Vagrant species by BirdList.org, the White-Winged Dove is thought to be well outside it’s usual habitat with only a handful of recent sightings in our region. With a little bit of researching, I was able to come up with two separate sightings, both from Quidi Vidi, St. John’s.

Just recently, I came across Bird the Rock, another birdwatching blog based out of Newfoundland. They had listed a spotting in June of a White-winged Dove in Trespassey. Despite being rare to our parts, it seems that our friend is beginning to make an appearance almost annually.

With 2013 just around the corner, I can't help but get excited about whether or not we will see the White-winged Dove again.
