Cedar Cove Hiking Trail

Cedar Cove is a great destination for hikers of almost all calibers. The trail is rugged and natural, without being so hard as to exclude anyone. This trail is a favorite of mine, and I try to hike it a few times each summer when I can.

The trail begins at the very end of the road in little port, where a set of wooden steps bring you over the hill and into the forest. From there, it’s a relatively simple walk through the woods with a few mild hills.

This hike offers a fantastic variety of wildlife and countless opportunities to teach your little ones about the natural world around them. Home to numerous edible wild plants and berries, countless inspiring views, and even a wide array of colorful bird species, Cedar Cove never ceases to impress and is a must-see location for tourists.

Once you’re at trail’s end, you’ll find a large pond that is teeming with life. There are nearly always flocks of gulls, crows, ravens, and sparrows to be seen and heard around the pond, and if you look closely you’ll find the insect life here is fascinating and plentiful, as the pond is filled with charming whirligig beetles, dragon and damselflies, and numerous other water-loving species.

The rugged cliffs and tumultuous waves of Cedar Cove embody the spirit of Newfoundland, a raw and natural beauty that is undeniably captivating. This is the kind of place where you could sit and watch the shorebirds flying, the fisherman passing through, and spend hours basking in the extraordinary beauty that the cove has to offer.

If you’re here on the west coast of Newfoundland, take a drive to Lark Harbor and hike Cedar Cove, you’ll be thrilled that you did.
